Why Can't I Renew Online

Below is a list of possible reasons you can't renew online.  On the bottom portion of the blue registration renewal notice, you may see a STOP sign.  On the back of your registration renewal notice, there may be an explanation and a phone number for you to call to resolve the issue.  Once the issue is resolved, you must pay in office or by mail.

Address Change  
If you have changed your address recently, a PIN number may not have been generated for online renewal.  If you move from one county to a different county, you will need to contact the county you currently live in for instructions.  Click the following link and select the county you live in to open county contact information.  County Contact Info

Change of Vehicle
If you have recently traded in your vehicle, obtained personalized plates or made other changes to your registration, you will need to contact our office (712) 737-2222.

Child Support
Iowa Department of Human Services may place a Child Support STOP on your customer record.  You must contact them at 1-888-229-9223.  Once the issue is resolved, you must pay in office or by mail.

Contact Driver’s Services
The Iowa DOT may place a “Contact Driver’s Services” STOP on your customer record.  You must contact them at (515) 244-9124.  Once the issue is resolved, you must pay in office or by mail.

Clerk of Court
The Clerk of Court may place a STOP on your customer record.  If you are in a payment plan for Clerk of Court fines, please call the office where you make your monthly payments.  Request their office fax a letter of release to us (515) 993-5875.  You may then call us (515) 993-5812 to ensure we received the fax.  Once the issue is resolved, you must pay in office or by mail.  Please note the letter of release is only valid for ten days.  If you are not in a payment plan, call the phone number on the back of your registration renewal notice.  If there is no phone number on your renewal notice, please contact our office (515) 993-5812.  Clerk of Court Phone Numbers

Deceased Vehicle Owner
The surviving spouse, or next surviving heir, must transfer ownership of the vehicle in the county where he or she currently resides.  Contact the county you currently live in for instructions.

Delinquent Mobile Home Taxes
If you owe taxes on your mobile home, located in Sioux County, it will STOP your vehicle registration renewal.  Please contact the Tax Department (712)-737-3505.  Once the issue is resolved, you must pay in office or by mail.

Delinquent Registration More than Six Months
If your registration is overdue by more than six months, you will need to contact our office for the current amount due (712)-737-2222.  You must pay in office or by mail.

Department of Revenue
The Iowa Department of Revenue may place a STOP on your record which will prevent vehicle registration renewal.  Contact them at 1-866-339-7912.  Once the issue is resolved, you must pay in office or by mail.

Fire Fighter Plate
Fire Fighter license plates cannot be renewed without an original "FIREFIGHTER License Plate Application" completed in full and signed in front of a notary by your Fire Chief and a Fire Officer.  The original, notarized "FIREFIGHTER License Plate Application" must be presented in the office at the time of renewal or enclosed with your payment if you prefer to renew by mail.

Parking Tickets
Sioux County has an agreement with the following cities which allows your registration renewal to be stopped until you pay for outstanding parking tickets.  Please contact the city in which you have outstanding parking tickets.  Once the issue is resolved, you must pay in office or by mail.

Personalized Plates with a Registration that is Delinquent more than 60 days
If you have personalized plates and your registration is expired for more than 60 days, you will have to repurchase your personalized plates.  Our office must contact the State of Iowa to ensure your personalized plates are still available.  Please call ahead to ensure a smooth transaction when you come into the office to pay for your registration (712)-737-2222.  If you choose not to repurchase your personalized plates, you must surrender the personalized plates to our office and you will be issued standard plates.

SR22
The Iowa DOT may place an SR22 requirement on your customer record.  To renew your vehicle, you must present an AAMVA form, often called a “Uniform Financial Responsibility Certificate”, to our office.  Your insurance company is responsible for generating the form and providing it to you.  The document must be completed in full and match the vehicle you are renewing.  Your insurance company can fax it to (712)-737-8170.  You may then call us (712)-737-2222 to confirm we received the fax.  Once we have received the necessary document, you must pay in office or by mail.
