Tom graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Dakota in 2006 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. In 2010, he graduated from Drake University Law School, interning with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Iowa. He was admitted to the bar in September of 2010. Tom served as an Assistant County Attorney with the Story County Attorney’s Office in Ames and Nevada for three years until 2014, when he accepted his appointment to become the Sioux County Attorney.
On behalf of the State of Iowa, Tom has handled bench trials, jury trials, post-conviction relief appeals, child in need of assistance cases, termination of parental rights hearings, civil commitments, and asset forfeitures. Tom also provides legal advice to the Board of Supervisors and county and township officers.
Tom also currently serves as Vice-chairman on the Decategorization Governance Board, covering Sioux, Cherokee, Ida, Lyon, and Plymouth counties. He also serves as a member of the Iowa County Attorney Association Juvenile Justice Committee, and is on the Plymouth County Drug Court advisory board.
